Funnily enough, one of the most common questions I’m asked through this site, and in my lawn care business in general, is, ‘How would I go about starting a lawn care business of my own?’ It seems the business of lawn care and lawn mowing is pretty popular for those wanting to run their own enterprise!
In this article I’m going to talk about how to make money in lawn care and lawn mowing. If you’re already set on this path, look to the bottom of the page for help in starting your own lawn care business. Similarly, if you’re looking at concentrating on starting a lawn mowing business, I have some great resources.
I can imagine why it’s a popular business choice, to be honest. I love my work in lawn care, and I love working for myself even more. Running my own lawn care business lets me:
- Work my own hours, and take days off when I want to
- Work outdoors, not be trapped in an office
- Be create and solve problems, especially in neglected gardens
- Make a difference – you’d be amazed how delighted people can be with their newly manicured lawn and garden.
How Do I Start My Own Lawn Care Business?
I think part of the attraction is that most people see lawn maintenance as being a pretty uncomplicated job. Turn up, mow the grass, cut edges, done. Well, unfortunately for the new lawn care entrepreneur, there’s a whole lot more to it than that.
I’ve been working in grass care for over 35 years and I’m still learning about grass – it’s a living organism, and as such, grass is a complicated beast to care for. At one end, mowing a lawn isn’t too complicated, and the right techniques can be mastered pretty quickly. But, going beyond that, you need to become an expert in grass management.
- You need to be able to diagnose a grass problem – whether pest, disease or weed – and know how to fix it quick, through supplements or otherwise.
- You need to know exactly what type of grass you’re looking at, and match it to it’s soil environment. Only then can you apply the right supplements to enhance growth.
- You need to know what to do if you have to start over. Sometimes it’s easier to remove the existing lawn and create a new one – are you good with seed and establishment?
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
The Lawn Care Education To Get You Started
Because of the obvious demand for this information, I thought I’d offer a couple of options that would get the aspiring lawn care expert up to speed, and started on the road to financial independence as a lawn care business owner.
Option 1: Recommended Lawn Care Business Packs
The easiest and cheapest way to begin in starting a lawn care business, or starting a lawn mowing business, is through self-study. This takes a bit of dedication, having to learn on your own time, but it’s great value, so great if you’re on a budget.
I have read through a few lawn care business courses, and there are two that I can recommend. They’re both written by American authors, but the material is great, covering everything you need to start up a new lawn care business. They also cover the important art of making it a success, growing your customer base and your profits, year on year.

Have a look at both of their sales pages and choose which one’s for you. Or, if you’re really serious there’s no reason you shouldn’t choose both – there’s great information in each resource.
Best of all, if, after reading them, you don’t think the resources really helped, they both offer money-back guarantees, so you’re really nothing to lose!
